Mark Daniels ~ The Despair of Morning Light

Mark Daniels ~ The Despair of Morning Light

Mark’s work is so dark and oppressive sometimes, he makes Roger Guetta look like Mary Poppins. This one is a little lighter than most of his … a hint of human habitation, but still quite noir … an ambience of longing and regret.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away

The other night, dear, as I lay sleeping
I dreamt I held you in my arms
When I awoke, dear, I was mistaken
So I hung my head, and I cried

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away

I’ll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another,
You’ll regret it all one day

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You never know, dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away

You Are My Sunshine by Brian Ferry

I once read a review of this album wherein the reviewer said only Bryan Ferry could turn this song into a dirge of devotion from a slave to his master in a sadomasochistic relationship. I wouldn’t argue with that.

I would say that the lines “But if you leave me to love another/You’ll regret it all one day,” smack, so to speak, of topping from the bottom.

Zut alors!
