I watched with great interest (and no small amount of envy) the great flower shots Maia Panos began getting with her  8x telephoto lens purchased from last month. So I decided to buy one myself.

After doing a google search, I found a different one, the Mobile Phone Telescope at, item #MTLSC003300. I also ordered their Mobile Holder with mini-tripod, to hold the iPhone on a tripod. The cost for both was about $30US + a small shipping charge. Maia’s was about $10 more. The ten dollars was not the issue: I thought a 6x lens would be more usable indoors or for the kind of pictures I like to do. I really didn’t think there would be that much of a difference.

Was I wrong? Let me count the ways.

Let’s start with the the holder and tripod. If you look at the picture, you will see a little piece of black plastic just above the tripod and holder. That is the “clip” that broke off immediately when I tried to to put the phone into the holder. It may be fixable with strong glue, but what the hell?

The first thing I noticed about the lens is that they didn’t even include a lens cap. Where Maia’s lens had just one slim lens-holding iphone sleeve, you can see that this lens comes with a clumsy front-and-back clip-together assembly. It doesn’t hold the lens well at all, and the way it’s set up, it allows a huge light leakage which ruins a picture if you are shooting with a light source, i.e., the sun, above and behind you. This could be fixed with black tape, I suppose.

Why am I writing all this? It is a piece of crap and don’t waste your money!! I will be ordering the good one from – their tripod adapter was far superior as well -and will write another review with sample shots after I’ve received it.
