Where do you live?
West Orange, NJ

What kind of art were you doing before the iPhone?
Painting with acrylics.

Can you tell us what happened when you first started shooting pictures with your iPhone?
Nothing at first. Just used it to shoot photos of vacations, friends, and family. Then, around 2013, I stumbled across P1xels and I was blown away by the amazing work I encountered. I didn’t know this was possible with an iPhone! I started reading about iPhotography and apps and it was quite an education. And here I am.

Were you active on Flickr as iPhone usage exploded? Who were the first iPhoneographers/artists who caught your eye?
Never used Flickr. Most of my work was (and is) on Facebook. The first iPhotographers to catch my eye were Meri Walker, Paul Toussaint, Damien de Souza, and Luba Luft.

What or who else inspires you? Painters? Photographers? Other plastic arts? Music? Literature?
I know it’s trite but everything inspires me. I try to shoot every day but that’s not always possible. Some days, I take dozens of photos and maybe I’ll like 2. Other days I shoot 5 and like all of them.

My favorite things to shoot are trees, flowers, animals, abandoned buildings and homes, urban landscapes. I want to add more people to my portfolio.
I have special fondness for old-time photographers, the ones who shot with film and used darkrooms. WeeGee, Vivian Meier, Cindy Sherman, Diane Arbus, Mark Hirsch, to name a few.

What are your go-to apps?
Snapseed, PhotoWizard,  Hipstamatic, Distressed FX, PS Express. I also like Instagram’s filters. Very sad that Lo-Mob is no more!

If you had to choose three creatures, real or imaginary, to be your personal totem pole, what would they be?

Labrador retriever.

Tiger

Crow.

How many times have you fallen asleep with the phone in your hand while apping a picture?
Never.

Cats or dogs?
Love both! Right now I have 3 spoiled cats.

Beatles, Stones, or Dylan?
Love them all but the Beatles are my fave.

Has there been any surprising impact on your life from the iPhone, something you didn’t expect?
Yes! Having my work selected to be in gallery shows!

Do you have a mantra for daytime? For nighttime? For anytime?
Not really. I try to go with the flow. I have good days and bad since I suffer from generalized anxiety.

Did I forget to ask a question you would like to answer? Please ask it and then answer!
What upsets you most about iPhotography?
Apps that no longer work when you upgrade your Apple software. And software developers that don’t upgrade their app so that it works.

A last word, perhaps?
Be kind to one another.

Thank you, Martta.

I posted four galleries of Martta’s work in November, 2018. Be sure to visit! Here is a sampling of her work.
