About the music: “The Empty Room” is a cycle of 21 pieces for solo guitar by Estonian composer René Eespere (b. 1953). The cycle is divided into three series, each dedicated to a different guitarist:
- Series I–VII: written for Heiki Mätlik
- Series VIII–XIV: written for Reinbert Evers
- Series XV–XXI: written for Eleftheria Kotzia

He studied composition at the Estonian Academy of Music under Anatoli Garšnek and continued as a postgraduate at the Moscow Conservatory with Aram Khachaturian and Aleksey Nikolayev. Since 1979 he has been a Professor of Composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. His music is characterized by minimalist pulsation, spiritual depth, echoes of Baroque and Estonian folk music, and a rare ability to create intimate, contemplative atmospheres.
