I have seen a lot of books made by artists using Blurb or other self-publishing platforms. I applaud such initiative.

People usually put in twice as many pictures as they should. I think this has to do with two things: 1) insecurity—it’s the let’s-throw-the-whole-pot-of-spaghetti-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks and 2) most artists cannot curate themselves. I’m sorry, it’s true.

Bob Dylan thought some song of his, utterly forgettable and I can’t even remember the name of it, was the greatest song he ever wrote. Nobody else thought so. Can’t remember if the label released as a single.

Anyway, I stumbled on this video. I love the simplicity of his layouts and I certainly agree with his ideas about pacing the book and pairing images.

And, of course, the grid.

Something to think about when you make your own book! But get some help curating it.
