I hope you are enjoying these galleries as much as I am. I was showing them to Maia Panos today and, of course, she remembers lots of the pictures. We were laughing about the overall awfulness of most of them, but we both agreed on how exciting it all was, and how new, and how it was clear that people were trying make a new kind of art with the terrible iPhone “camera” and the few very buggy and limited apps we had at the time.

And how much fun it all was in those early, heady days.

I had a couple other pictures that were in the show (voted in by a jury of 11), but they aren’t the folder. Maybe these were not in the show, just submitted. They were shot on Christmas evening, 2009, with ToyCamera, at Maia’s place, where I live now, in the tower next to her house. I LOVED ToyCamera.

Kurt Godwin

I think only the first one made it into the show.

Seth Jacobs

The very last picture made it into the show. I have no idea what the judges were thinking. Unlike the guy at the Mobile Photo Awards, I have never over-ruled the judges.

Skip Hunt

Funky Love Bunny

Only the first one made it into the show.

Happy Sunday.

This is R.L. Burnside. I’ve always known the name, but I never listened to him until last week. I loved him from the opening song, which is so strange, what he’s doing on the guitar: a strange repetitive modal blues riff, basically one chord.

And the lyrics:

Poor Black Mattie ain’t got a change in clothes
Girl got drunk, close that door
Poor Black Mattie ain’t got change o’ clothes
Girl got drunk, throwed her clothes outdoor

Goin’ to Memphis, see the World’s Fair
Reason I’m goin’, baby, there
Goin’ to Memphis, see the World’s Fair
Reason I’m goin’, know my baby there

Need no heater fireplace by my bed
Women I got cherry red
Need no heater fireplace by my bed
Woman I got, keep me cherry red
Woman I got, keep me cherry red

And no, he doesn’t the verses in order.

At the nineteen minute mark, he plays “Bad Luck and Trouble,” singing lyrics I’ve never heard in any recorded version. It’s like the man was living inside my head.

Yeah you know I begged for a nickel
Oh Lord to put in a telephone
Yeah you know I begged for a nickel
Oh Lord to put in a telephone
Yeah I wanna talk to my baby
You know she been gone so long

Yeah you know whiskey and women
That’s all in the world I crave
Yeah you know whiskey and women
That’s all in the world I crave
Yeah you know a beautiful woman
Yeah I believe she will take me to my grave.
