2 for theodore roethke by Michael McClure
PREMONITION
My bones ascend by arsenics of sight.
Where noise is all the sound there is to hear,
Beginning in the heart I work towards light.
My toes are clutching at the Hawk and Kite,
My eyes are spiralled up and still so near
My bones ascend by arsenics of sight.
Feet burn to walk the mackerel sky at night
And run on ribs that in the clouds appear
Beginning in the heart, I work towards light.
Ears are aching for the Great Bird’s bite
What sings inside me climbs above my fear
My bones ascend by arsenics of sight.
Premonition dazzles on the height.
Amazed, in blood and bone, a slaughtered steer,
Beginning in the heart, I work towards light.
The skin and wingless skull I wear grow tight.
The echoes from the sky are never clear.
My bones ascend by arsenics of sight.
Beginning in the heart, I work towards light.
