I don’t pay a huge amount of attention to modern art photography. I much prefer the passion and energy of the lunatic iphonic art movement, which reminds me of the pictorialists of a hundred years ago. I also think that Photoshop has impacted modern photography in a most egregious manner, distilling the life out of it with its perfection.
Tonight I discovered a documentary, Brief Encounters, about photographer Gregory Crewdson and was transfixed. He uses Photoshop, as well as an 8×10 Hasselblad, along with a crew you would normally find on motion picture set. They take days to stage a shot. Really amazing.
I went on YouTube to see if the documentary was there, but it’s not. This short documentary will give you a good idea about him and his work, which is simply phenomenal.
He also seems like a very nice guy.
