Some of you may recall my attempt to create a social network for iPhone photography at P1XELS.com. It didn’t work out: Facebook was still riding high. I’d still like to do it, but it will only work if people finally see Facebook for what it is and decide to join forces here. I’m not going to push it, but it’s available if there is a demand.
Social media is the enemy of art. You can’t trust any of them. I offer you Vine, Posterous, and Tumblr as proof. And don’t get me started on the censorship of Facebook and Instagram.
That said, I have often lamented the two-year gap in the posts here on the site, from December, 2016, to December, 2018, when I relaunched Pixels here. I know I kept making art with my phone; I just didn’t have anywhere to post it. Occasionally I would post on various social media, but it wasn’t the same.
I know you are saying, “Get to the point, Knox!”
Okay, here we go.
It occurred to me yesterday that everybody kept making pictures for the duration of those months and why not put out a call for submissions to fill in the gap?
So here is the proposition: we have a twenty-four month gap to fill there and then a gap from September, 2013, to March, 2014, for … damn … another seven months. That was the time my developer friend said we could launch the new site in a couple weeks.
We have thirty-one months to fill. I propose we start by doing one artist gallery per month.
And to clarify: I am NOT to going to be a super-stickler about these dates – they are just guidelines for contributors.
If you want to take part, please put together twenty or thirty or forty pictures, preferably from those periods, or thereabouts, when Pixels was offline. It’s hard to keep track of dates of creation, for myself anyway, so don’t stress about it. I mean, I know that most of my pictures from Coalinga were done during the downtime.
Anyway, put your collection of pictures somewhere I can get them, i.e., Dropbox or iCloud, or whatever, and send the link to email@example.com and tell me which month you would like to claim. I will build your gallery and backdate it so it goes into that month, along with a current post and link back to the gallery page.
I hope everybody will want to take part. If we get more than 31 participants, we’ll just add them in.
