I made a magazine to commemorate the show. Fourteen-and-a-half years later, the art stands up. Those were such great times. It was so exciting.
As I wrote in the book, PIXELS AT AN EXHIBITION,
In April, 2010, a local magazine asked me if I wanted to produce an iPhone art show at their Oakbook gallery in Jack London Square. We put out another call for submissions, free once again, cobbled a jury together and selected the winners, and made beautiful 17”x22” prints on archival paper. Maia and I mounted them on foamcore and hung the show.
In just a few months, the progress that had been made in terms of the caliber of the art that came iin for the Oakbook show was staggering. I sat in the gallery Wednesday through Sunday for five weeks. The area was a ghost town on weekdays, even with the presence of a large Barnes & Nobles bookstore fifty yards away.
It was open-mic night for iphoneographic art, the first two years, but I knew it had to be done: we were laying the groundwork for the future, blazing the path for all to follow.
