“Rain” was an incredible demarcation point for The Beatles. John Lennon kept complaining about not having a bass sound like Wilson Pickett did. Geoff Emerick, their engineer, finally figured it out. The song itself is so strange, but listen to Paul McCartney’s bass playing and Ringo’s drumming. It’s incredible how all the parts fit together. It sounds fresh to me today, sixty years later.

And, of course, there was the backwards section at the end of the song. I will tell you it blew this sixteen-year-old’s mind. Still does.
